The title of this photograph is “Down the Drain,” by Kevin Jin. This photograph shows water splashing into a sink with a spoon in it. The water flows downwards towards the drain and there are splashes of water all over the sink. The focus of this photograph is the drain. It is emphasized by the movement of water (spiraling) around it. It is also in the very centre of the rule of thirds. The change of texture in the drain also makes it stand out from the rest of the smooth sink. The right vertical of the rule of thirds aligns with the water coming down from the tap and the left vertical aligns with the tip of the spoon. The top horizontal meets where the sink starts to curve upward, and the bottom horizontal aligns with the tip of the spoon handle. The random splashes of water come together and form a variety of different shapes. The wavy lines of water create a sense of movement in the photograph.
The value contrast in this photograph is somewhat high due to the water coming down from the tap being white and the sides of the sink being dark. The contrast of textures is somewhat low in this photograph because everything is smooth, but there is a small change in texture at the drain (the holes create a bit of a rough texture).
The message of this photograph is that nothing stays the same in life and our world keeps changing. I would never be able to take a photograph that is identical to this one because of the way water moves randomly and forms all different kinds of shapes and sizes. There is only one chance to take a photo like this; similarly, many things in life only occur once. The photographer took this photo to show movement and how time always moves on and never goes back so we will not be able to experience the same thing multiple times in our lifetime. Therefore, we should make the most of our time! This photograph appears very pure and clean. Water is generally thought of as clean and pure so we use it to wash cars, dishes, hands, and more! Usually clean things are ecstatic and pleasant, so we can conclude that the mood of this photograph is upbeat and it inspires us to make the most of life!
